What should I have in my property if I want to start renting to guests?

Every guest is different, but generally a rental property is a home-from-home; whatever you would need in your day to day life, that’s what a guest will expect in your property. Though, we have a few pointers –

Kitchen –

Coffee maker – We do not recommend supplying a cafetiere as guests tend to empty these down the sink which causes blockages.

Wine glasses – The most frequently broken item. Best idea is to buy cheap, generic wine glasses from Carrefour so they can be easily replaced with matching items.

Cups, plates, glasses and cutlery – You will need at least as many as your maximum amount of guests, plus a couple extra of each.

Pots, pans and utensils – Basically as many as you can fit in the kitchen without it being cluttered. Avoid hanging utensils over the hob as they get very greasy.

Oven gloves and chopping board – again, cheap ones are best; they tend to get ruined fairly quickly.

Toaster and kettle – kettles with a flat element are easier for us to descale.

Good quality knives, not serrated. Easier to keep sharp.

If renting to French clients, who tend to cook at home more, we recommend –

Raclette and fondue set.

Large, deep casserole dish

Tall glasses for aperitifs

Bathrooms –

1x bin per bathroom or toilet

1 x Toilet brush per toilet

1x Hairdryer per bathroom

Bedrooms –

Mattress and pillow protectors

Duvet covers and pillow cases should ideally have no fasteners; believe it or not, a duvet case with buttons can take 3 times longer to put on.

Bedside lamps

2x pillows per person, and a couple of spare ones.

Wooden, matching coat hangers

General –

1x Cot

1x High chair

Board games (Also in French if necessary)

If renting to French guests, French TV is a must, even if it’s just standard digital service.

DVDs tend to get scratched or lost, so instead we recommend either a Netflix account or an Amazon Fire dongle.

Welcome folder with all instructions (Wi-Fi password, parking, kitchen etc), translated into French if necessary.

Easy password for Wi-Fi – We can change this for you free of charge if you don’t know how.

Ski room and key if necessary

Garage or parking with instructions and fob if necessary

Iron and ironing board

Large clothes dryer

Brush and mop

If you have electric heating, we suggest putting signs above every heater warning guests not to cover them. The dyes in skiwear can permanently stain heaters.
